How the Calculator Works
This calculator combines your Section I (Multiple Choice) and Section II (Free Response) performance into a single 0–100 composite score, using the exam's official 50/50 weighting. It then maps that composite against this site's configurable, publicly documented estimation model to suggest a likely AP score. Every step of the math is shown in your results so you can see exactly how your estimate was produced.
AP Chemistry Exam Structure
The current AP Chemistry exam has two sections, each worth half of your total score:
- Section I — Multiple Choice: 60 questions, 50% of exam score.
- Section II — Free Response: 7 questions (3 long, 4 short) worth 46 raw points, 50% of exam score.
MCQ Scoring
Your multiple-choice score is simply the number of questions you answer correctly out of 60 — there is no penalty for guessing. That raw count is converted to a percentage, then weighted to 50 points in the composite: MCQ percentage = correct ÷ 60, and MCQ weighted contribution = MCQ percentage × 50.
FRQ Scoring
Free-response questions are scored using official College Board rubrics for partial credit on each part. Your raw FRQ score out of 46 is converted the same way: FRQ percentage = raw score ÷ 46, and FRQ weighted contribution = FRQ percentage × 50. Composite Calculation
Your estimated composite is the sum of both weighted contributions:
Estimated composite = (MCQ percentage × 50) + (FRQ percentage × 50)
