What Is the AP Chemistry Reference Sheet?
College Board provides every AP Chemistry student with an official reference packet during the exam, titled "AP Chemistry Exam Reference Information." For the 2025 and 2026 exams, it's a short multi-page document: a cover page, a full periodic table of the elements, and two pages of equations and constants grouped by topic. It's a fixed, standardized document — every student gets the identical sheet, and College Board only updates it occasionally rather than changing it year to year.
Formula Sheet, Equation Sheet, Reference Sheet, Reference Table — Same Document
Students and teachers use several different names for this same official packet: formula sheet, equation sheet, reference sheet, and reference table all refer to the identical College Board document. None of these are separate resources — if a teacher says "bring your equation sheet knowledge" or a study guide calls it the "formula table," they mean this same reference packet.
What's Actually on the Sheet
The equations and constants pages are organized into clearly labeled sections, by topic:
- Unit symbols, unit conversions, and metric prefixes — the front-matter reference block.
- Atomic Structure — energy/frequency/wavelength relationships and Coulomb's law, with constants like Planck's constant and Avogadro's number.
- Gases, Liquids, and Solutions — the combined gas law, the ideal gas law (PV = nRT), partial pressures, molarity, density, and Beer's law.
- Kinetics — integrated rate law forms and half-life relationships.
- Equilibrium — equilibrium constant expressions (Kc, Kp), Kw, pH/pOH, and acid/base Ka/Kb relationships.
- Thermodynamics/Electrochemistry — enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy relationships, the Nernst equation, and Faraday's constant.
It is not a full formula reference for every topic on the exam. Notably absent: solubility rules, polyatomic ion names and charges, organic chemistry nomenclature, and any explanation of when a given equation applies. Those all have to come from what you've actually learned.
How to Use It During the Exam
The reference sheet is provided for both the multiple-choice and free-response sections — that's different from a calculator, which is only allowed on the free-response section. You're permitted to use any blank space on the sheet for scratch work during the exam, but proctors collect every reference sheet at the end — you don't keep it or take it home.
Because you're not required to memorize the equations and constants themselves, the real exam skill is knowing which relationship applies to a given question and what each symbol means — not finding the formula. That's a skill built by practicing with the actual sheet before test day, not by re-deriving equations from memory during the exam.
Common Mistakes When Relying on the Sheet
- Not knowing which equation to reach for. The sheet lists equations by topic, but it doesn't say which one fits your specific question — that judgment has to come from understanding the chemistry, not scanning the page under time pressure.
- Assuming it includes things it doesn't. Solubility rules and polyatomic ion charges are two of the most common false assumptions — both have to be memorized separately.
- First contact on exam day. If the first time you look closely at the sheet's layout is during the actual exam, you'll lose real time just locating the right section. Practicing with a copy of the real sheet during review is worth the few minutes it takes.
- Expecting to keep it. Since proctors collect it at the end, don't plan on using it as a take-home study resource after the exam — review it beforehand instead.
Relationship to the Periodic Table
The periodic table isn't a separate item you're issued — it's physically part of the same reference packet, immediately preceding the equations and constants pages. Any time the reference sheet is provided, the periodic table is included with it.

Do I need to memorize the equations and constants?
No. College Board provides them on the reference sheet itself. What you're expected to know is which equation or constant applies to a given question and how to use it correctly -- the sheet won't tell you that part.
