Where real, free AP Chemistry help actually comes from, what each one is good for, and what to skip.
"Khan Academy AP Chemistry" is one of the most-searched phrases among students studying for this exam, and for good reason: it's genuinely one of the better free options out there. But it's not the only one, and it's not equally good for every part of the course. Here's what each major free resource actually covers, where it falls short, and an honest answer to the textbook-PDF question most guides avoid.
Khan Academy: The Closest Thing to a Full Free Course
Khan Academy has been the AP Program's official free practice partner since 2017, and its AP®/College Chemistry course now covers all 9 units with videos, articles, and AP-aligned practice questions. That makes it the most complete single free resource for working through the content unit by unit.
One catch: Khan Academy's own unit names don't exactly match the exam's official numbering, which can make a unit hard to find if you're searching by number. Here's how they line up:

AP Classroom and AP Daily: The Official (and Underused) Option
AP Classroom is College Board's own platform, and it holds two things Khan Academy doesn't: AP Daily, a library of short instructional videos made by AP teachers, and a bank of real, previously administered exam questions. A lot of students assume both require a teacher or school enrollment. Neither does.
Sign in to My AP with your own College Board account, select AP Chemistry, and open any unit's Course Guide to start watching AP Daily videos immediately. Every video has a searchable transcript, so you can jump straight to the exact concept you're stuck on instead of watching a full video for one explanation. Crash Course Chemistry: Good for Intuition, Not for Unit Review
Crash Course Chemistry is a well-known, free 46-episode YouTube series, and it's a genuinely good watch for building intuition on a topic you're not getting. It's not, however, built around the current AP Chemistry course. The series predates the exam's present unit structure, and it covers general chemistry more broadly than what's tested now, including full episodes on nuclear chemistry and organic chemistry that fall outside the current exam's scope entirely. Treat it as a supplement for a specific concept, not a unit-by-unit study plan.
Notes, Flashcards, and Quizlet
There's real search demand for pre-made AP Chemistry notes, flashcards, and Quizlet sets, and it makes sense: building your own from scratch takes time. The problem is quality control. Anyone can publish a Quizlet deck, and a set built around an outdated unit structure or a factual error will teach you the wrong thing with the same confident formatting as a correct one. There's no reliable way to vet these before you've already relied on them.
A safer default: build your own notes and flashcards directly from each unit's review page here, which stays matched to the current CED and gets updated when the exam does. It takes longer up front than downloading someone else's deck, but you know exactly what's in it.
What About Textbook PDFs?
A meaningful share of AP Chemistry searches are for a specific textbook PDF, often Zumdahl's, in a specific edition.
