The AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description (CED)

The AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description is College Board's own description of it: "the core document for this course." Unit 3 carries by far the heaviest weighting of any single unit — nearly a quarter of the multiple-choice section — which makes it the highest-leverage unit to study thoroughly rather than skim. Unit 8 is the second-heaviest.

Each unit's weighting range reflects real variation between different administrations of the exam, not a fixed target — a test in a given year might land anywhere within that unit's stated range.

The Science Practices

Content knowledge alone doesn't determine your score — every exam question is tied to both a piece of content and a skill, called a science practice. There are six:

This matters practically: a free-response answer that states the right fact but never explains the "why," tied to a model or theory, typically scores lower than one that does both. The CED sets expectations for what a student should already know before starting the course, and what the course itself must include.

If your class covers noticeably less lab time than this, it's worth knowing that's a real curricular requirement, not an optional add-on.

How Students Should Actually Use the CED

Most students never open the CED directly, and that's a missed opportunity — not because you need to read all of it, but because a few specific parts are genuinely useful for planning your studying:

CED vs. the Reference Sheet

These are two different official documents, and it's easy to conflate them. The CED is the full curriculum and exam-design document — hundreds of pages covering course content, science practices, and instructional guidance. The reference sheet is a much shorter document you're physically handed during the exam: just the periodic table and the equations and constants pages. Every equation on that exam-day reference sheet traces back to something the CED's topic pages define — but the reference sheet itself is not a substitute for the CED, and vice versa.
